Choosing the correct finish for hardwood and softwood beams

Traditional oils and waxes are more appropriate on old beams and look better than modern finishes.

If the beams are very dry and you don't mind them darkening slightly, use Finest Danish Oil or Raw Linseed Oil diluted with White Spirits. Apply to the wood by brush and allow to penetrate before wiping off all excess oil.

For a paler shade on pine or oak Liquid Beeswax is a better option. Again apply to the wood by brush and wipe off all of the excess with a cloth as with oils.

On smoother beams use Paste Beeswax rather than liquid applying by cloth or Ultra Fine 0000 grade Steel Wool before buffing along the grain with a Furniture Waxing Brush or a soft cloth.
